Cultural Heritage Projects

Cultural Heritage Projects are due December 15.

Please be sure to send back the form that states your choice for the cultural heritage project. This way we can send you the full directions, supplies and an example.

There are 3 choices for creating a project about your cultural heritage.

1.  Personal Narrative--write a true story that tells about a family tradition.  This could include a holiday or non-holiday tradition.

2.  Google Presentation--Choose a country that represents your heritage or a country that you would like to learn more about.  Add pictures and videos that show the flag, map, clothing, music, food, and/or holidays of that particular country.

November 17-21 and 24 & 25

Happy Thanksgiving!
We are very thankful for wonderful families like you!

  • Important News
    • Winter is coming and unfortunately that includes snow!  Please pack an extra pair of gloves and socks in your child's backpack in case they get wet.  Also, if you would like to keep an extra pair of pants and socks at school, please send them in a large ziploc bag with your child's name on it.  We will keep them in our classroom in case your child gets wet at recess and needs to change.  Thank you!
    • Dads and Donuts is on Thursday, November 20.  Dad or a special guest may come any time between 7:45-8:45 for a special breakfast of donuts, coffee, and juice. Please do not leave your child unattended or in the classroom prior to 8:50 am. Thank you!
    • Mrs. Haughey's class welcomed a new student this week.  Brandon came to Aurora from Arizona.  Welcome!

    Homework
    • Practice tying shoes and zipping coats! Please make sure all hats, gloves, scarves, mittens, and snowpants are labeled with your child's name.
    • Make a card for the Joy Maker Challenge (if you would like to participate)

    Language Arts
The next three weeks we will be learning about cultures around the world.  We will be learning about the different homes they live in, types of transportation and the ways children get to school.  We will be comparing and contrasting what we have learned.  Our focus in word study is on middle sounds.  We will also continue our personal narrative unit in writing.

    Math
We will be solving story problems with and without manipulatives.  We will also be learning about place value.  For example, 34 means 3 tens and 4 ones.  34 also means 30+4.
Service Project--The Joy Maker Challenge

Miller School is participating in a great service project that will brighten a day for children who are in the hospital.  If you would like to participate, please have your child make a holiday card for the children and send it to school by Wednesday, November 19.  Each card that is made, Hasbro will donate a game or toy to the "Toys for Tots" campaign.  Thank you for taking the time to model the idea of giving back.

  • Counting
Language Arts
We will be reading several stories about Thanksgiving.  Our focus skill for the week is comparing and contrasting.  We will also be working on listening and writing the middle sounds in words.  The students have been learning how to "chop" the words in order to hear each sound when writing.

RAZ kids--A Literacy Resource
The Aurora City Schools has purchased another resource for your child to use to increase their literacy skills.  It's called RAZ kids and you can download it for FREE!  We have taught all the children how to log on and put in their password.  Now, we are sending home the information so that your child can access it at home as well as school.  This resource, much like Storia, offers students an opportunity to read books at their level, answer comprehension questions and earn stars for completing these tasks. The kids have found this to be highly motivating because they use the stars to purchase pieces to build a robot!  Please look for the log in information to come home this week.  Have fun reading and building!

Math
We are working on several activities to build the concept of subtraction.  We are also working on number recognition, counting and number formation.

Have a great week!

Two Hour Delay Procedures

If our Superintendent, Mr. Bennett announces a "Two Hour Delay", school will begin for our kindergarten students at 11:05.  Lunch and dismissal time will remain the same.
